Ambassador Charles A. Gillespie, a career diplomat, died in La Jolla, California, on Friday, March 7, 2008 at the age of 72.  Ambassador Gillespie had a very distinguished career in the foreign service, specializing in Caribbean and Latin American affairs.  He served in the U.S. Embassies in several countries and was U.S. Ambassador to Colombia and Chile.  Ambassador Gillespie is survived by his two children, Charles and Kristin and their families, including three grandchildren.  His wife of 45 years, Vivian Havens, died in 2003.

A Memorial Service took place on Tuesday, April 8, 2008.  The service was held at the Church of the Covenant in Arlington, Virginia.
